Metacognitive therapy is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy that aims to treat mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety in adults or children. It was first developed by Adrian Wells in the 1980s out of a need for an evidence-based treatment for post traumatic stress disorder. It focuses on the expectations and beliefs that patients have about worrying thoughts, memories which are not being clear or accurate or when they really show symptoms from their illness.
In contrast to traditional CBT sessions where the therapist does all the talking and there are no verbal reactions from the participant, metacognitive therapy emphasizes sharing important information with one another in a respectful way. Patients must share their experiences with one another which includes their observations about themselves.
