Depression is one of the mood states. This mood, which can be considered normal to a certain degree, becomes a disease as its duration increases and its severity increases. Depressive disorders may be due to a negative life event or occur when there is no apparent problem. Research has shown strong connections between depression and some biological factors. For example, the inefficient functioning of chemicals in the nervous system such as serotonin, noradrenaline. In other words, some individuals are prone to depressive disorder due to their biological characteristics. Therefore, drug therapies have important benefits in the elimination of depression. In addition, some people may become depressed depending on the season. They become more depressed, stagnant and reluctant, especially as winter approaches.
Some individuals tend to develop depressive disorder due to their personality structure. Basic life problems can become a very difficult problem for them. Lack of strong personality traits and immature defense mechanisms cause them to easily depressive mood. Psychotherapy as well as medications must be included in the treatment of these individuals
Depressive disorder is a disease that usually occurs with recurrent attacks, so treatment should be improved. Drug treatments and psychotherapies are the best treatment methods of depressive disorder. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT; shock therapy) can be applied in very severe and urgent cases (serious suicide attempt, postpartum depression, psychotic depression). Antidepressant medications should be used regularly for at least 8-10 months after cessation of medication to maintain good health and reduce the risk of recurrence.
The effectiveness of various types of psychotherapy (cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy, supportive psychotherapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy) has been demonstrated in the treatment of depressive disorder for the prevention of recurrence.
