Psychiatric Medicine Therapy

Today psychiatric medicated treatments and psychotherapy treatments are used in mental illnesses. However, there is a general and false belief that mental illnesses are seen as an abstract disorder rather than being treated with medication. In addition, thoughts that these drugs have many side effects and that they are addictive also support this mistake.

In fact, the history of medication in psychiatry is very recent. Most of the drugs used before the 1950s were in the form of sedatives. After the 1930s, some drugs began to be used in the form of stimulants.

When we look at the patient analysis reports in the 40s, it was seen that drugs were widely used. At least one drug was used for both inpatient and outpatient treatments. However, these drugs were rarely documented.

Today, drugs that are actively used in the treatment process of mental diseases are monitored and followed by observing their results. Contrary to popular belief, these drugs are not heavy sedatives and do not cause addiction.

What is Psychiatric Medicine Therapy

In the treatment of mental disorders, in addition to psychotherapy, medication (pharmacotherapy) is called psychiatric medication. Psychiatric drugs are used to correct or help to correct abnormalities that cause certain psychiatric symptoms.

Various types of drugs are used in the treatment of mental illnesses. The most commonly used of these are antidepressants, anti-psychotic drugs, anxiety suppressants, mood stabilizers and stimulant drugs.

There are misconceptions about such drugs. Namely;

•          Psychiatric drugs make you gain weight. This is a completely false belief. Although only certain drugs cause weight gain due to increased appetite, these drugs are used in patients who lose weight due to decreased appetite. It is never used in patients who have weight problems or want to get it.

•         Antidepressants are addictive. This belief is completely wrong. These drugs are not addictive. However, it should be used under the supervision of a doctor. Because it is necessary to adjust the dose when necessary. If this does not happen, it can sometimes cause different reactions in patients. These are distress, insomnia and restlessness.

•         These drugs cause infertility. None of the psychiatric drugs cause infertility. However, it is not recommended to be used during pregnancy or not to harm the baby while breastfeeding, unless it is absolutely necessary.

•         Psychiatric drugs make you sleepy. Only some medications make you sleepy. These drugs are used in patients with sleep problems.

How Long Does Psychiatric Medication Treatment Last?

It is not possible to say anything about the duration of treatment of psychiatric drugs. While it is necessary to use it for a lifetime in some diseases, it can be reduced under the supervision of a doctor.

During the follow-up of the disease, specialist doctors can reduce or increase the dosage of the drugs. This is all about the course of the disease. You should never engage in behaviors such as starting or stopping these drugs with the words of others or false information.
