Finding Help: Where to Go Psychologist or Psychiatrists?

According to the results of a study conducted on 500 people in 2006, 56.6% of the participants evaluated psychologists to find help as speaking and psychiatrists as medicines.

According to the results of the research;

After the identification of symptoms of depression , question what would you do in this case?.. 57% of the respondents answered that they thought it was a temporary situation and would not do anything.

When the symptoms of schizophrenia were given and asked what would you do to your relative in this situation? 51, 51.8% of the subjects answered that I will take them to a psychiatrist ”.

When panic disorder symptoms were identified and asked, What do you do in this situation? ’, 57% of the subjects stated that they would go to their internal medicine doctor, and in the next question, what would you do if your internal medicine doctor referred you to a psychiatrist? While 64.1% of the subjects answered this question as im I go to a psychiatrist,, 16% of the subjects stated that they would go to another internal medicine doctor.

People with mental health problems are also uncertain about where to go. Mental health service should be carried out in a team work. Mental health professionals:

Psychiatrist: A physician graduated from the faculty of medicine working in the recognition, prevention,of mental disorders. And completed psychiatric specialty training. The psychiatrist is a specialist who graduated from the medical faculty for 6 years. Then completed a psychiatric residency for 4 years. It is the person who has knowledge about the general diseases of the human being. And has the authority, knowledge and equipment to define the mental structure and to treat when necessary.


The psychiatrist coordinates the mental health team as a clinical decision-maker. The planning of theare entirely under the responsibility of the psychiatrist. It is entirely within the responsibility and competence of psychiatrists to diagnose all kinds of mental problems, to plan treatment, medication and other treatment methods, as well as to implement appropriate psychotherapy.

No other professional group has the authority to carry out these practices independently.

Apart from the occupational groups listed above, life coach, NLP etc. are not in the mental health team.

Your mental and physical health is a whole. So, many mental symptoms may indicate a physical illness, and many physical symptoms may indicate a mental illness. Only the physician can decide the treatment with you. Most mental disorders have biological treatments such as medication and / or psychotherapy. Psychotherapy is also a medical intervention, but it can be done by your psychiatrist or under the guidance of a clinical psychologist with training and competence in a particular therapy. Your psychiatrist decides with you the appropriate treatment for your mental state.
