What is cleaning disease?
Cleaning disease is the person’s obsessions about constant cleaning.
Though the person knows that it is absurd, the thought that he cannot get out of his head includes emotion behaviors.
Obsessions: Uncontrollable obsessive thoughts.
Compulsion: Behaviors that these obsessed thoughts want us to do or not to do
For example, if the person was washing his hands with the thought that his hands were dirty, and he was washing his hands repeatedly (compulsive behavior) saying “my hands are still dirty, not clean (obsessive thought)”, we can say that he is obsessed with cleanliness.
What are the Symptoms of Cleaning Disease?
These are important symptoms if the following behaviors are repeated repeatedly.
When you come home, take the clothes right in front of the door.
Go to the bathroom as soon as you get home. Asking other people living at home to do the same.
Cleaning the house every day for hours.
Taking a bath for over an hour.
Wash hands constantly.
Take a bath many times.
Washing the laundry over and over again.
Washing dishes with bleach.
Cleaning of every packaged product taken from outside.
Washing of toys every day.
Causes of Cleaning Disease
Cleaning disease can be attributed to many reasons. First of all, it appears to be caused by changes in brain chemistry. In other words, it can be said that it is caused by corrupted message in some parts of the brain. It can cause this disorder for psychological reasons rather than just physiological reasons. These are; The reason for the cleanliness is seen in the feeling of situations such as the feeling of guilt due to some events, past traumatic experiences, conflicting – unhappy relations and loneliness.
Which sex is more common?
It is seen that cleaning disease is more common in women because more time is spent in the house. While it is seen that it is higher in males in early childhood, there is no significant difference in adulthood according to gender.

Cleaning disease initially, without disturbing the person emerges. People who we call meticulous, prone to order, symmetry and control, are more likely to experience cleaning disease. Therefore, it is very important to consult a specialist as soon as he or his surroundings become uncomfortable.
