What is Transactional Analysis Therapy

Although Transactional Analysis (TA) is known as a communication theory in psychology; it is both a personality theory, a development theory and a psychopathology theory. It’s also a transactional analysis deals with the development of all of these.

It treats human beings positively, theorises the functioning of personality, and explains human behavior through personality ‘the functioning of egos’.

To explain incompatible behaviors and their reasons; to analyze behavior. It is a theory open to change and development.

The theory of transactional analysis was put forward by Eric Berne, a Canadian medical doctor. Berne first studied psychoanalysis from Eric Ericson in 1936, while working in the psychiatric clinic at Yale University in the United States, and accompanied the famous ‘raft meetings psik attended by all psychoanalytic members. After a good training in psychoanalysis, he started to work as a psychoanalyst. Later, however, he began to doubt psychoanalysis because psychoanalysis was too long and he could not see any signs of concrete recovery.

Berne, who later began to do his own work; did not intend to come up with a new theory, he just wanted to develop psychoanalysis. However, after receiving three rejections from the Institute of Psychoanalysis, he decided to form his own theory and published his first article in 1957 using terms such as ‘Transactional Analysis’ and ‘Ego States’. In 1964, he founded ‘Transactional Analysis Association’.

What are the causes of human behavior according to transactional analysis?

People are OK by birth: This article emphasizes that people are valuable because they are only human beings from the moment they are born without being separated and marginalized. That is to say, we must distinguish between man and his behavior. A person may behave badly, but before his behavior we must love the ‘human’ part.

Everyone has the capacity to think: In contrast to Freud’s Psychoanalytic Theory, Berne here emphasizes that man is not passive but on the contrary has the capacity to think for himself and tries to reveal this part of the individual in transactional therapy. She believes that everyone can decide what happens in her life.

Transactional Analysis Based Therapies

The therapist and the client are equal in the therapies includes transactional analysis. There is no hierarchy between them. The therapist should ensure that the client develops and changes in the direction of recovery. Eric Berne’s classical transactional analysis approach includes 4 basic analyzes

  • Structural Analysis: At this stage, therapist analyses the client’s ego states (parent, child, adult)and personality.
  • Transactional Analysis: At this stage, therapist anaylzes the client’s communication with other people around them.
  • Game Analysis: At this stage, the awareness of the client increases.
  • Scenario (Fate) Analysis: Finally, in the scenario analysis stage, the client gains autonomy with the increased awareness and therapist asked them to remember his childhood memories. The therapist enables the client to free the scenarios created by the client by considering the childhood memories and supports the client to make new decisions in his or her life.
